What Is Therapy?
Physical Therapy The treatment of injury, disease and other physical disorders to restore function or reduce disability. Procedures
include: exercises to increase strength, range of motion, coordination and circulation; balance, endurance and gait
training (often with the use of assistive devices such as walkers or canes); and physical agents such as hot/cold packs,
electrical stimulation and ultra sound; or exercise to relieve pain, promote healing and restore function.
Occupation Therapy The use of purposeful activities to restore and maximize independence, prevent disability and maintain health.
Occupational therapy treatment includes experience with functional tasks to improve coordination, balance, cognitive
skills, strength and range of motion for activities of daily living. Adaptations for disability are also addressed through
compensation training and adaptive equipment. The focus of occupation therapy is to improve or restore function to enable the patient to participate in daily living activities to the fullest extent possible
Speech Therapy The treatment of communication deficit or a swallowing problem in order to manage, rehabilitate, or modify such
disorders. Procedures include treatment in the areas of language disorders, cognitive disorders and swallowing risks.
This involves cognitive and memory retraining and oral motor exercises for speech and swallowing deficits.
